We are Aurélie and Julien, passionate about travel and discovering new places. Since the arrival of our two boys, Oscar and Marius, we’ve chosen to share our love for adventure with them. This winter, we explored part of Quebec and discovered Gaspésie in a van adapted for winter conditions — a unique one-week experience in the snow that we highly recommend.

Winter: the best season to discover Gaspésie in a van
Gaspésie is an iconic region of Quebec, but it is often overlooked in winter. And that’s a mistake. Snow-covered landscapes and frozen lakes offer spectacular views. Traveling by van allowed us to visit places like Gaspésie National Park or Percé Rock without the summer crowds, for a truly immersive experience in nature.
One week in a van in Gaspésie
The journey begins with a first stop at Bic National Park, located in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region. Accessible year-round, this park offers breathtaking winter scenery. The winter entrance at Rivière-du-Sud-Ouest is the starting point to explore the park.
Visitors can enjoy snowshoeing, fat biking, or snow scooters depending on weather conditions. Special mention for the incredible sunsets, and if you're lucky, you may even spot seals resting on ice blocks.
For accommodation, the park offers rustic campsites near the welcome center, ideal for van travelers. In winter, there is no electricity or showers, but the tranquility more than makes up for it.
After crossing the Matapédia Valley, we arrived at Gaspésie National Park, a true gem for mountain lovers. With its vast forests, frozen lakes, and snowy trails, the park offers breathtaking scenery.

For families, easy trails are accessible from the discovery center, allowing younger children to fully enjoy the experience. Some trails are closed in winter to protect wildlife, including woodland caribou.
To spend the night, the discovery center parking lot welcomes vans free of charge.
The journey continues toward Forillon National Park. Even in winter, its cliffs and views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence are stunning. Accessible trails allow for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
We ended our trip in the charming village of Percé. In winter, it becomes a peaceful place far from the summer crowds. The sunrise over the cliffs, with Percé Rock in the background, is unforgettable.
A peaceful and authentic Gaspésie, far from the tourist rush.
Thanks to our VanLife Friendly membership, we were able to alternate between park spots and unique locations hosted by locals.
After a week of exploration, it was time to head back to Montreal. This winter adventure in Gaspésie was filled with incredible landscapes and meaningful family moments.

Flexibility and autonomy
Vanlife allows you to adapt your itinerary in real time depending on weather or your desires. This flexibility is especially valuable with children.
Family comfort
Traveling with kids can be challenging, but a well-designed van makes it much easier. Our LIV van from VanLife Campers was perfectly equipped.
We had a table for the kids to draw, spacious beds, plenty of storage, a kitchen for warm meals, and even a shower and toilet.
Connection with nature
Vanlife allows you to stop in remote places and enjoy nature fully. The kids loved playing in the snow, watching the stars, and exploring the forest.
Better budget control
Cooking in the van and sleeping in nature or campsites significantly reduces costs compared to hotels and restaurants.

The three-layer clothing system
To face winter conditions, especially in Canada, proper clothing is essential. Thermal base layer, insulating middle layer, and waterproof outer layer.
Plan activities for long drives
Books, coloring, music, and regular breaks help keep children entertained.
Don’t forget a first-aid kit
Always bring essential medication, thermometer, and basic supplies.
