Here’s an itinerary to Charlevoix to help you get some fresh air and reconnect with the joys of winter!

When the cold sets in, it’s tempting to stay cozy under the covers and watch the snow fall. But there always comes a moment when you feel like getting out and fully enjoying winter. To inspire you, we’ve put together a winter road trip itinerary to help you get some fresh air and rediscover the pleasures of the cold season.
Head to a region beloved by outdoor enthusiasts: Charlevoix.
Known for offering some of the most breathtaking scenery in Quebec, it’s packed with activities to enjoy with family or friends—even in the heart of winter.
Here’s our suggested 4-day itinerary with VanLife Campers, just a few hours’ drive from Montreal.
Baie-Saint-Paul
After picking up your van, hit the road early toward Baie-Saint-Paul, a must-see destination in the region.
After about four hours of driving, you’ll arrive in a historic village full of undeniable charm, known for its colorful façades, century-old homes, and vibrant artistic atmosphere.
Sainte-Anne and Saint-Jean-Baptiste streets are well worth a visit. You’ll find shops, cafés, restaurants, and numerous art galleries. It’s the perfect first day to soak in the unique vibe of Charlevoix.
Camping Le Genévrier
For the night, we recommend Camping Le Genévrier, located just near the village. It’s one of the few campgrounds open in winter offering van-friendly sites, with access to electricity and sanitary facilities.
The site is wooded, peaceful, and offers several activities:
Given its strategic location and the limited number of winter camping options in the region, you can easily stay here for multiple nights. Our vans are fully insulated for all four seasons and off-grid capable, which also allows the more adventurous to sleep out in nature—one of the great pleasures of winter vanlife.
Le Massif de Charlevoix
On your second day, it’s time to hit the slopes at Le Massif de Charlevoix. With the highest vertical drop in Quebec and breathtaking views over the St. Lawrence River, the experience is simply unforgettable.
Downhill skiing, snowboarding, alpine touring, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or sledding—there’s something for everyone. The resort also offers a variety of activities and events throughout the season.
La Malbaie
About a 40-minute drive from Baie-Saint-Paul, La Malbaie welcomes you between river and mountains. Start with a walk along the Pointe-au-Pic wharf to take in the peaceful winter scenery of the St. Lawrence River.
We then suggest a walk up to the Manoir Richelieu via the Pointe-au-Pic staircase. This easy trail offers beautiful viewpoints and continues with La Balade à la vitesse de la lumière, an educational and fun path about our solar system.
A refreshing outing—perfect for getting a breath of fresh air.
Old Quebec
On your way back, make a stop in Old Quebec. In winter, its streets are quieter and even more charming. The Petit-Champlain district, Place Royale, Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church, and Château Frontenac offer stunning views over the city and the river.
Take the opportunity to warm up at a local artisan shop with a hot chocolate or some maple taffy.
We hope this itinerary inspires you to experience winter differently and set off on an adventure with VanLife Campers.
